Adam Gilchrist is enraged that the DC captain disputed with the umpire during the 2024 LSG IPL match.

On Friday, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, former Australia cricketer Adam Gilchrist was not impressed by Rishabh Pant’s dispute with the on-field umpire during the IPL 2024 match between Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals. Gilchrist argued that umpires ought to have greater authority over the game so as to prevent them from becoming entangled in superfluous debates during a match.

Pant was observed engaging in an extensive and impassioned discussion with an on-field umpire during Lucknow’s batting in the fourth over. After Delhi lost a review on a wide-ball review by Dafabet Apps Padikkal off an Ishant Sharma delivery, he appeared visibly enraged.

Initially bewildered and unable to determine the subject of the discourse, the commentators were perplexed until Sunil Gavaskar concluded that Pant had almost certainly not requested a reassessment of the wide ball. Nonetheless, the replay soon revealed that the captain of Delhi had formed the letter ‘T’ in response to the delivery.

Gilchrist told Cricbuzz following LSG’s innings that the approximately five-minute conversation between Pant and the umpire could have been more succinct and straightforward. Gilchrist posits that in the event of a decision, the on-field official might have been able to request the captain to resume the game. Moreover, he advocated for the proposition of endowing umpires with the authority to penalize a participant monetarily for persistently prolonging the discourse.

Tonight, I witnessed yet another situation in which umpires were required to exercise greater control over contests, irrespective of the format. In essence, it is imperative that they augment their ability to advance the situation. A divergence of viewpoints surfaced with respect to the review status of Rishabh. A pervasive misunderstanding occurred during the discussion surrounding the review.

Nevertheless, they deliberated on the subject while standing for three to four minutes. In my opinion, the discourse at hand is comparatively straightforward. Irrespective of the complaints lodged by Rishabh or any other participant, it is expected that the umpires promptly declare the game to be over and return to their individual concerns. The Australian stated, however, that he should be fined if he continues to speak.
